Intro to Genealogical DNA

Presentation Summary

Our February 2019 general meeting eatured Craig Gowens presenting “An Introduction to Genealogical DNA Testing”. As the science behind it continues its advance and the price has continued to drop, more and more people have jumped onto the DNA testing bandwagon to see what this technology can reveal about them and their family history, possibly uncovering some secrets along the way. DNA testing has become an indispensable tool for the modern genealogist and spawned its own branch of the field, genetic genealogy. Genealogy is the 2nd most popular hobby in America and is the 2nd most visited category of websites on the Internet.

We discussed evaluating whether DNA testing is right for you, looked at how the emerging field of genetic genealogy has intersected with forensics to solve several cold case murders and rapes over the last year, and where the technology is heading. Then we looked at what DNA results from the major testing sites look like, what the advantages and disadvantages are of each and how you can get the most bang for the buck out of DNA testing.

CapMac member Craig Gowens gave the presentation remotely from his home in Seattle area. He was a stalwart on the CapMac Board until his move to the Pacific Northwest last spring.

Craig is an outstanding genealogical researcher, researching his own family history for over 30 years. Craig started on the path of DNA testing five years ago and has now tested over 30 family members. The results have successfully solved several family mysteries and broken through brickwalls on several branches of his tree. Prior to moving, Craig led CapMac’s Genealogy SIG for several years. He has been a featured speaker for the DNA SIGs of the Austin, Williamson County, and Seattle Genealogical Societies and at the Sno-Isle Genealogical Society where he now serves on the Board.

Craig used this PDF handout for his presentation. He has also provided a PDF of his presentation. Please download the PDF’s for his most interesting and timely presentation.
