I finally got around to putting my treasured Macintosh Color Classic to work - I set it up as a web server! Yes, this 11 year old Mac with a 16 MHz 68030 processor is cheerfully serving web pages to the world using free MacHTTP software.

With it's 10 MB of RAM and Open Transport networking built into Mac OS 7.6.1 it was actually very quick and easy to do. The folks who make web servers out of Mac Pluses and Mac SE's have to work much harder to get their machines serving with pages with just 4 MB of RAM to work with and no built in network interface.

- The Mac Plus Web Server - this web server runs on two floppy disks!
- The Mac SE web server

Not much to see on the Color Classic web server other than the home page right now, but I will be adding pictures of it in action and there is a tracker installed to keep a log of visitors.

Have a look! http://colorclassic.dyndns.org/

Excellent! I couldn't remember if a Color Classic had built-in ethernet and sure enough it does. Bridging any Mac with LocalTalk to ethernet would be tough and require additional software like the AppleIP Gateway.

I also wondered which first Macs had built-in ethernet and as close as I can tell it was the original Quadras: 700, 900 in 1991.

I don't think the Color Classic came with ethernet. I think I put in an Apple ethernet card that was scavenged from an old Performa. (I did that part several years back after the Color Classic was given to me by a friend at Apple). The Color Classic has a single "LC PDS" slot for expansion. You can have an ethernet card, or a modem, but not both.

OK that had me puzzled Question

I knew the Color Classic didn't have a NuBus slot, so you have an LC PDS-to-NuBus adapter or is that ethernet card specifically for the LC/CC?

No adapter involved, just a card that is designed to fit the special PDS slot in LC type Macs. They run about 6 bucks on ebay nowadays.

That is really cool. I am currently using my color classic as a print spooler for my laser printer. It's specs include RJ-45 ethernet card (3MB i think), 48MB ram and a 3GB HD.

I do have about 6 more Ethernet cards that will fit a color classic or the preforma series system. Some that use AAUI -> RJ-45 adapters. If anyone is interest in purchasing one, please let me know.

I added a new page to my Color Classic web server site which explains the motivation for doing this, and how I was able to get the necessary software installed and serving web pages within about 30 minutes:

I’ve also set up my Colour Classic as a server. I’ve had it since 1995 and couldn’t bring myself to throw it away/ sell it/ whatever. I upgraded it to the “Mystic” configuration in 2003 with the 640x480 screen size. It now operates in my network as a print server/local talk bridge for my laser printer with Appleshare 4.0.2 and also serves up a few files. Next project is to stick a larger HD in it and replace the broken Floppy drive. http://212.159.68.77

Hey that's an awesome web server! We should start a movement to get all of the remaining Color Classics in the world repurposed as web servers to demonstrate the longevity of Classic Macs.

My CC looks like a slacker compared to yours which is also being a file server and print server!

I noticed a lot of visits to my Color Classic web server were coming from one place, so I took a moment to check it out and found that the 68k Macintosh Web Server list has really taken off!

Perusing the list you'll find web servers on machines well over a decade old, including "Elsie", a Mac LC that's running Apache and PHP on NetBSD!

It was exactly a year ago today that I put the Color Classic web server online, so I wished it a happy birthday and checked the server stats, which indicate an average of 100 people a month stop by, and over half of them are Windows users! The stats also credit the 68k Macintosh Web Server Directory as generating the most "referrals." I've always loved the introductory statement to their list:
Quote:
Welcome to the 68K Macintosh Web Server Directory. All of the web sites listed here are hosted by "obsolete" Macs that, for one reason or another, have managed to avoid retirement. Some are cherished heirlooms, still under the loving care of their original owners, whilst others have been snatched from the jaws of oblivion by dumpster-diving fanatics and pain-stakingly rehabilited. Either way, the inescapable conclusion is that these old Macs are still productive citizens of the internet and should be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve...

I particularly like this SE web server that includes a live webcam of itself displaying the server log updating in real time as you access it.
