I have put a quicktime on a site at http://www.animalmakers.com (see for yourself). I used Final Cut Pro to make it and saved it as a .mp4 format.

The video plays fine on all computers that I can find. However, the sound works on some and not on others.

The computers that have working sound have been macintosh and pc (windows xp and 2000). So far, the sound is not working on all the laptop computers I have tried (all are pc computers). I will try a macintosh laptop today.

Ideas?

I suspect an audio codec issue. Do you have a way to tell which codecs are used? I tried to find a codec inspector for QuickTime but I could not find one. I know they exist though.

If you (using Quicktime Pro) under the window menu, choose show movie info and or show movie properties you can tell which codec is being used for the movie.

Here is a bit dated but useful page on codecs I found. http://people.csail.mit.edu/tbuehler/video/codecs/index.html and more technical aspects of codecs here: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/RM/CompressDecompress/CodecComponents/index.html

I'm not sure if this has to do with the current issue, I suspect it has more to do with the specific machines browser or system configuration.

Well, doing more troubleshooting, I have found that it only happens when the user is using internet explorer. As far as I can tell, they are all using the latest version of internet explorer as well as the latewst quicktime on their computer. It works fine in Safari, Netscape and Firefox.

Ideas?

IE for the Macintosh is no longer being supported by Microsoft and has not been updated in a long time. Have your users switch to the above supported browsers.

OK, that is somewhat helpful. However, I am also having problems with IE for Windows.

Ideas?

I can confirm this issue. I visited your site on my Sony VAIO notebook running XP Pro SP2. IE resulted in video but no sound. FF played the video just fine complete with sound. The VAIO is completely up to date (XP wise) and is running the most current versions of QT and iTunes.

This may have to do with the fact that you are using AAC as your audio format. What version of QuickTime is installed on the Windows machines that can't hear the sound?
