Mac Genius Jeremy Derr presents "Turning a Mac mini into a home media center"

Thursday, September 8, 2005
7:30 PM to 9:30 PM

Mac Mini front view
At just 2 inches tall and 6.5 inches deep the Mac mini represents one of the most amazing Macintosh computers ever created by Apple.

Within hours of its announcement at Macworld Expo in January 2005 Mac and PC users alike began imagining and planning ways to integrate this miniature Mac into home entertainment centers.

Our special guest for the September CapMac general meeting is Jeremy Derr, Mac Genius at the Apple Store Barton Creek.

Jeremy will show us how to turn a Mac mini into a home media center to play music, display photos and video, back up other Macs, control it remotely, and much more.

"When both its hardware and bundled software are considered together, the Mac mini is a spectacular value. No other computer maker offers a luxury-class case design, as robust a software package as iLife '05, and a virus- and spyware-free operating system comparable to OS X in a single box for under $500.

Jeremy has been using Macs - and fixing them - since he broke his dad's PowerBook 165c in the early 1990s. He helped connect every classroom in Mesquite, Texas, to high-speed internet before "broadband" was a household word, and worked for the ad agency responsible for Chick-fil-A's lovable cows before joining Apple in 2000.

After winning personal recognition awards for "Best Customer Satisfaction" in Apple's AppleCare technical support division, Jeremy joined the ranks of Apple's award-winning Mac Genius teams, working at the Apple Store Houston Galleria and, later, Barton Creek Square in Austin. Constantly tinkering with gadgets new and old, his current project is turning his Mac Mini into a total home media server.
