April 10 meeting - learn to backup your Mac

Thursday, April 10, 2003
7:30 PM to 9:30 PM

Our Macintosh computers have evolved to handle data that is more important than ever to us. In addition to our financial records and personal and business correspondence, we now entrust our music libraries, priceless digital pictures, movies, and more to the safety of our hard disks. As some have sadly discovered, these mechanical devices are prone to failure without warning.

Mac columnist Henry Norr reported in the San Francisco Chronicle that portable computer drives are ten times more likely to crash, and almost one in six laptop computers is stolen every year.

Even more often, we accidentally delete or overwrite files ourselves which are irreplaceable and can't be recovered.

"There are two types of people in the world," 'Doctor Macintosh' Bob Levitus advised in one of our very first CapMac meetings, "those who have lost data, and those who will."

When the inevitable happens, will you be prepared with a backup of your vital data? Or will you curse the fates and wish you had taken the time to set up a backup routine so that your only loss is the time to restore your precious data?

Join us at our April 10 meeting for a special presentation on "How to Back Up your Mac" by Matt Morris of Dantz.

Founded in 1984, Dantz Development Corporation of Orinda, California is a leading worldwide provider of backup software. The Dantz Retrospect family of backup products has earned numerous awards for protecting business critical information on servers, desktops, and notebooks.

With four different versions of Retrospect for the Macintosh, Dantz covers the market from personal backup to large enterprises with thousands of workstations. Their software works with a multitude of different drives and media, and their web site can help you select which is best for your needs.

Dantz has published several "white papers" on the subject of backup strategies. These documents provide excellent resources for understanding the requirements of a good backup and the importance of planning your strategy before setting it up:
Retrospect for Macintosh saved an episode of the popular animated television show, The Simpsons. Retrospect customers include The University of Texas, Motorola, Walt Disney, and more.

In addition, Valerie Schriber will provide details about our new "Tutor a Teacher" program to help local teachers get the most from their Macs.

Plus, questions and answers, our monthly raffle, the nicest Mac friends you could ever hope to meet, and more!

Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend. Don't miss it!
