Running Windows Applications on Your Mac - Boot Camp, Parallels, and Crossover Mac

Thursday, February 8, 2007
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

On April 5, 2006 Apple Computer surprised the world by announcing Boot Camp, beta software that allows Intel-powered Macintosh computers to run Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. The announcement was so unexpected that some people thought it was an overdue April Fool's Day prank.

The stock market reacted to the release of Boot Camp by pushing shares of Apple upwards almost 10% as financial analysts and technology pundits alike realized that enabling Windows applications to run on Mac hardware helps eradicate one of the most longstanding objections cited by prospective switchers to Apple products.
Join us on February 8 as CapMac members Brandon Bielstein and Jim Ryan demonstrate Boot Camp, Parallels, and Crossover Mac, three of the leading options that enable Intel-powered Macintosh computers to run Windows applications.

Mac OS X and XP logos

Available for free download, Apple's Boot Camp is described as a beta version of an upcoming feature of Leopard, the next major release of Mac OS X. Speculation that Apple would begin selling Macs with Windows preinstalled alongside Mac OS X was blunted by a statement from Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of worldwide product marketing: “Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows. We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.”

The very next day, Mac users were treated to another surprise as software called Parallels was announced which allows Windows to run simultaneously with Mac OS X on Intel-powered Macintosh computers in a secure virtual machine. Like Boot Camp, Parallels is available for free trial download, and a license costs just 79.99. Our monthly raffle at the February General Meeting will include a copy of Parallels as a prize all attending members are eligible to win.

The latest entrant into the world of options for using Windows-compatible applications on Intel-powered Macs is Crossover Mac, from CodeWeavers, who state their mission is "to transform Mac OS X and Linux into Windows-compatible operating systems ... to help users migrate from the Windows software world to these other environments." Crossover Mac is based upon the open source Wine Project.

Our February general meeting is a tremendous opportunity for you to learn firsthand about these breakthrough software packages that enable Macs to be considered by longtime Windows users as their next computer. Even if you aren't interested in running Windows applications on your Mac plan to attend and bring a friend who is!
